Metal-Beating Hammer

With enough hammer blows, gold can be hammered until it is about 0.1 micrometres thick. There are about 500 sheets of gold in the square beneath the hammer, interleaved with paper soaked in an ink made out of soot, buffalo-hide glue and pine oil to prevent disintegration and the gold from sticking to it.
